About The Ride

Every year, a small group of cyclists commit to riding 3,300 miles in 48 days in the interest of raising funds, awareness, and spirits for the American Lung Association.  This year, the ride will begin in Seattle, Washington, and will finish at the Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C.

The Big Ride is an effort by the American Lung Association meant to raise funds for their Mountain Pacific branch.  The ALA uses donations to run a multitude of programs, including disease education, community service projects, and advocacy programs. The organization is also intent on curing lung disease, funding quality lung research, stop smoking programs, and healthy air programs to ensure that the air we breathe is clean.  To learn more about the American Lung Association's efforts, please visit their website.

On the ride, participants will be challenged both physically and mentally.  The group is made up of people from all across the country, of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.  A typical ride for the cyclists averages about 80 miles a day, but can range from 50 to 100 miles depending on the schedule.  While this undertaking can be grueling, the payoff is worth it.  There is no better way to view the changing U.S. scenery than at 14 miles per hour.
